CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be speaking at an event at the University of Virginia on Wednesday.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky will be talking about the CDC’s response to public health threats for the UVA School of Medicine Medical Center Hour.

According to a release, the presentation will describe the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic and the CDC’s forecast for this winter.

Walensky will also be talking about how the CDC is using epidemiology and data to guide policy regarding the prevention of medically significant illnesses.

This all aims to minimize the burden on the health care system and protect vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and immunocompromised.

Additionally, Walensky will discuss how newer surveillance methods, such as sampling from wastewater systems, has helped to detect various disease, including COVID-19, monkeypox or polio.
