New coronavirus cases leaped in California in the week ending Sunday, rising 32.3% as 128,893 cases were reported. The previous week had 97,460 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Tulare County reported 1,323 cases and five deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 594 cases and six deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 139,846 cases and 1,495 deaths — among the highest per capita death rates in California.
California ranked fourth among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 0.9% from the week before, with 753,773 cases reported. With 11.87% of the country’s population, California had 17.1% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 31 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Within California, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Santa Clara County with 463 cases per 100,000 per week; Solano County with 451; and San Mateo County with 446. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.
Adding the most new cases overall were Los Angeles County, with 35,043 cases; San Diego County, with 11,367 cases; and Santa Clara County, with 8,917. Weekly case counts rose in 53 of 54 counties from the previous week. Among the worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in San Diego and Orange counties.

Across California, cases fell in five counties, with the best declines in Humboldt County, with 312 cases from 390 a week earlier; in Mariposa County, with 76 cases from 108; and in Modoc County, with 8 cases from 10.
In California, 194 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 203 people were reported dead.
A total of 9,790,329 people in California have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 91,696 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 85,515,795 people have tested positive and 1,011,275 people have died.

Hospitals in 30 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 31 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 29 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
