New coronavirus cases leaped in Indiana in the week ending Sunday, rising 19.9% as 4,377 cases were reported. The previous week had 3,652 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Indiana ranked 33rd among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 16.4% from the week before, with 250,233 cases reported. With 2.02% of the country’s population, Indiana had 1.75% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, eight states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Tippecanoe County reported 96 cases and minus one deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 71 cases and three deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 57,958 cases and 428 deaths.
White County reported 19 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 17 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 7,834 cases and 98 deaths.
Clinton County reported 20 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported four cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 10,220 cases and 140 deaths.
Carroll County reported eight cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported eight cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 4,695 cases and 72 deaths.
Benton County reported five cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported one case and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 2,802 cases and 24 deaths.
Fountain County reported 17 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported nine cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 6,110 cases and 107 deaths.
Within Indiana, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Decatur County with 192 cases per 100,000 per week; Huntington County with 173; and Knox County with 161. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.
Adding the most new cases overall were Marion County, with 480 cases; Lake County, with 334 cases; and Allen County, with 291. Weekly case counts rose in 60 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Marion, Allen and Johnson counties.

Across Indiana, cases fell in 28 counties, with the best declines in Elkhart County, with 107 cases from 139 a week earlier; in Dearborn County, with 42 cases from 64; and in St. Joseph County, with 161 cases from 183.
In Indiana, 68 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 40 people were reported dead.
A total of 1,930,022 people in Indiana have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 24,816 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 96,952,191 people have tested positive and 1,065,109 people have died.

Indiana’s COVID-19 hospital admissions rising
USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, Oct. 16. Likely COVID patients admitted in the state:

Hospitals in 23 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 21 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 29 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
