Indiana reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 2,665 new cases. That’s down 46.5% from the previous week’s tally of 4,977 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Indiana ranked 48th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 19.4% from the week before, with 323,859 cases reported. With 2.02% of the country’s population, Indiana had 0.82% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 10 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Tippecanoe County reported 75 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 126 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 57,791 cases and 426 deaths.
White County reported nine cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 16 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 7,798 cases and 98 deaths.
Clinton County reported six cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 25 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 10,196 cases and 140 deaths.
Carroll County reported three cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported five cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 4,679 cases and 72 deaths.
Benton County reported three cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported nine cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 2,796 cases and 24 deaths.
Fountain County reported four cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported nine cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 6,084 cases and 107 deaths.
Across Indiana, cases fell in 85 counties, with the best declines in Marion County, with 284 cases from 514 a week earlier; in Lake County, with 222 cases from 445; and in St. Joseph County, with 110 cases from 213.

Within Indiana, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Knox County with 109 cases per 100,000 per week; Huntington County with 82; and Whitley County with 79. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.
Adding the most new cases overall were Marion County, with 284 cases; Lake County, with 222 cases; and Allen County, with 158. Weekly case counts rose in six counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Boone, Daviess and Whitley counties.
In Indiana, 38 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 65 people were reported dead.
A total of 1,921,993 people in Indiana have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 24,708 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 96,397,885 people have tested positive and 1,059,605 people have died.

Hospitals in 17 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 25 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 17 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
