Some Kansans have more time to catch up on rent with CDC’s new eviction moratorium

Johnson works with landlords and tenants on this issue every day. He said the new eviction ban does have some new limitations – the biggest one is it only applies to counties that are seeing “substantial” or “high” levels of COVID-19 transmission.

For Kansas, that would exclude the counties highlighted in blue and yellow on this map.

“Now rental assistance does seem so much more closely connected to the moratorium. And it seems to be tied to the amount of time that rental assistance will take to be distributed,” said Johnson.

Toney said she’s taking a small breath of relief, hoping this will buy her enough time for the money to go through so she can catch up on payments.

“Truthfully, just hang on because it will come. And I know everybody says that, but it will. It will come. And when it does, that stress will go away,” said Toney.
