Sebastian shared that his symptoms started a week after attending the New York Pride festival. In Sebastian’s case, the disease started with fatigue. Following tiredness, his first symptoms included high fever with chills and muscle aches. His lymph nodes also started swelling, which left him with a protruding throat.
According to the NHS UK, it can take between five to 21 days for the first signs of monkeypox to appear. The tell-tale rash linked to the infection usually appears a few days after the first symptoms. In Sebastian’s case, the rash appeared two days after the initial signs.
He shared that the rash started as anorectal lesions – painful sores on anus and rectum. Initially it was a “stinging, itchy feeling.” Since Sebastian had no underlying health problems, he believed he would recover after experiencing mild symptoms. However, the infection worsened to the point of him experiencing excruciating pain.
