ADRIAN — Lenawee County and most of Michigan are in the low community COVID-19 level, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Lenawee County reported 131 new cases and no deaths in the latest week, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. A week earlier, it had reported 136 cases and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 28,837 cases and 342 deaths.
Michigan reported 12,548 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, from 12,880 the week before of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Michigan ranked seventh among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 16.4% from the week before, with 250,233 cases reported. With 3% of the country’s population, Michigan had 5.01% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, eight states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Within Michigan, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Iosco County with 223 cases per 100,000 per week; Clinton County with 201; and Eaton County with 189.
Lenawee County was at 133 new cases per 100,000 people for the week ending Oct. 16, according to the CDC.
One county neighboring Lenawee, Lucas County in Ohio, was in the high community COVID level. In the high community COVID category, the CDC recommends everyone wear masks while at indoor, public places regardless of COVID vaccination status.
Monroe and Washtenaw counties in Michigan and Fulton County in Ohio were in the medium level. In the medium level, the CDC recommends people at risk of serious illness from the virus wear masks while at indoor, public places such as stores and theaters.
Jackson and Hillsdale counties in Michigan and Williams County in Ohio were in the low community COVID level.

In Michigan, 152 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 143 people were reported dead.
A total of 2,861,595 people in Michigan have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 38,919 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 96,952,191 people have tested positive and 1,065,109 people have died.

Michigan’s COVID-19 hospital admissions rising
USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, Oct. 16. Likely COVID patients admitted in the state:

Hospitals in 23 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 21 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 29 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
