Oregon reported 10,894 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, from 10,876 the week before of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Oregon ranked 11th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week, coronavirus cases in the United States increased 11.8% from the week before, with 800,077 cases reported.
With 1.27% of the country’s population, Oregon had 1.36% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 38 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Case numbers in Oregon and nationwide are assumed to be an undercount of the actual number of cases because many people are not getting tested or are using at-home rapid tests and are not reporting the results to state officials.
According to the Oregon Health Authority, fewer people are getting seriously ill under this new variant, but people are continuing to get sick. Lane County is in the “high” COVID-19 community case level category, which recommends wearing masks indoors.
Lane County reported 816 cases and five deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 908 cases and eight deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 66,389 cases and 568 deaths.
Within Oregon, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Sherman County with 674 cases per 100,000 per week; Grant County with 597; and Crook County with 512. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.
Adding the most new cases overall were Multnomah County, with 2,169 cases; Washington County, with 1,371 cases; and Clackamas County, with 947. Weekly case counts rose in 23 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Deschutes, Jackson and Douglas counties.

Across Oregon, cases fell in 11 counties, with the best declines in Washington County, with 1,371 cases from 1,666 a week earlier; in Multnomah County, with 2,169 cases from 2,415; and in Clackamas County, with 947 cases from 1,072.
In Oregon, 35 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 56 people were reported dead.
A total of 813,050 people in Oregon have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 7,818 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States, 87,843,561 people have tested positive and 1,017,848 people have died.

Hospitals in 33 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 28 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 40 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
