266 New Cases, 13 Deaths; State Passes 12 Million-Dose Mark; CDC Says Delta Is ‘Variant of Concern’

The Centers for Disease Control And Prevention today (Tuesday, June 15, 2021) upgraded the Delta variant to a “variant of concern” in the United States.
The CDC posts three categories of variants:

A variant of concern shows evidence of an increase in transmissibility, more severe disease (increased hospitalizations or deaths), significant reduction in neutralization by antibodies generated during previous infection or vaccination, reduced effectiveness of treatments or vaccines, or diagnostic detection failures.
The Delta variant already accounts for 10% of the cases in the U.S.
The good news is that two doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are effective against it, according to the CDC.
Also today, the U.S. passed 600,000 COVID-19 deaths. For a nation that accounts for 4% of the global population, the U.S. accounts for nearly 16% of all COVID-19 deaths worldwide, according to a story in USA Today.
Meanwhile, the Illinois Department of Public Health is no longer posting a daily news release on the COVID-19 situation, but it is posting updated information each day in graphics.
Today, the IDPH is reporting 226 new cases and 13 deaths related to COVID-19.
The seven-day test positivity rate for Kane-DuPage Region 8 stayed at 1.4%.
The state passed another milestone today, recording more than 12 million vaccine doses have now been administered. The full total is 12,017,152.
To date, 5,699,472 Illinoisans age 12 and over are fully vaccinated, accounting for 52.4% of the population. According to the IDPH, 60.97% of the population age 12 and over has had at least one dose.
