New coronavirus cases leaped in Mississippi in the week ending Sunday, rising 23.3% as 4,495 cases were reported. The previous week had 3,646 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Mississippi ranked 40th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 0.9% from the week before, with 753,773 cases reported. With 0.89% of the country’s population, Mississippi had 0.6% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 31 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
- Hinds County reported 679 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported zero cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 53,900 cases and 792 deaths.
- Rankin County reported 458 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported zero cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 37,446 cases and 489 deaths.
- Madison County reported 433 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported zero cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 24,909 cases and 330 deaths.

Within Mississippi, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Madison County with 407 cases per 100,000 per week; DeSoto County with 394; and Tunica County with 363. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.
Adding the most new cases overall were DeSoto County, with 728 cases; Hinds County, with 679 cases; and Rankin County, with 458. Weekly case counts rose in 81 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in DeSoto, Hinds and Rankin counties.

In Mississippi, 10 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, four people were reported dead.

A total of 814,979 people in Mississippi have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 12,480 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 85,515,795 people have tested positive and 1,011,275 people have died.
