Gaston County reported 689 additional COVID-19 cases this week

North Carolina reported 33,265 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, from 33,932 the week before of the virus that causes COVID-19.

North Carolina ranked fourth among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 14.2% from the week before, with 781,487 cases reported. With 3.15% of the country’s population, North Carolina had 4.26% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 13 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Gaston County reported 689 cases and five deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 738 cases and seven deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 72,198 cases and 883 deaths.

Within North Carolina, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Lenoir County with 551 cases per 100,000 per week; Duplin County with 507; and Hertford County with 507. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.
