With great sadness, the WHO Expert Advisory Committee on Developing Global Standards for Governance and Oversight of Human Genome Editing has learned of the passing of one of its members, Dr Ana Sánchez Urrutia, on Wednesday 4th August 2021. As the only Latin-American member of the committee, Dr Sánchez Urrutia anchored the work of the committee in the experiences and perspectives of people of Panama. Specifically, Dr Sánchez Urrutia provided constant reminders about the importance of fairness and equity in guiding human genome editing innovations and approaches to their governance. The committee celebrates Dr Sánchez Urrutia’s contributions to South American jurisprudence and law and her grounded appreciation for the essential elements of life across the globe. It is with great fondness that we remember Ana’s joyful personality and celebrate her legacy. We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to Ana’s family and all those across the globe affected by her loss.
