Covid UK news live: Latest updates as scientists say deadly blood clots ‘very rare’

UK Covid-19 vaccinations: Latest figures

Blood clots caused by the AstraZeneca vaccine are more deadly than other forms of thrombosis but are still extremely rare, scientists have said.

Researchers studying vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (Vitt) said roughly one in 50,000 people aged under 50 are affected by the condition after being jabbed.

Lead scientist Dr Sue Pavord, who works at the Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) NHS Foundation Trust, stressed that this reaction to the AstraZeneca vaccine is “very rare”.

“We haven’t seen new cases for the last four weeks or so and this has been a tremendous relief,” she added.

Elsewhere, the government has been urged to cap the price of private coronavirus tests, amid warnings that only wealthy families can afford to travel under the current testing requirements.

This comes as more than 100 outlets on the government website are charging in excess of £200 for PCR tests. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Tory MP Henry Smith called for a £40 cap, saying that travellers are having to “pay through the nose for a battery of tests”.
