Interim trial data shows low effectiveness for CureVac shot

  • German vaccine maker CureVac has said that interim data from late-stage testing of its coronavirus shot show a comparatively low effectiveness in protecting people against COVID-19.
  • The results on Wednesday appear to be a significant setback for CureVac’s efforts to develop a coronavirus vaccine, and the company’s stock value tumbled in after-hours trading.
  • While not all the data from its trial involving 40,000 participants in Latin America and Europe have been assessed yet, the company said interim results show the vaccine has an efficacy of 47% against COVID-19 disease of any severity.

At least 19 COVID-19 strains identified in Brazil

  • At least 19 variants of coronavirus have been identified in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, Instituto Butantan, a Brazilian biologic research center, said in a statement.
  • “There are 19 coronavirus variants circulating in the state of Sao Paulo, with the P.1 (Amazonian) strain prevailing in 89.9 per cent of cases,” the statement said. This is followed by strain B.1.1.7 (UK), which accounts for 4.2 per cent.

Portugal’s surge in cases highest since February

The European Union country reported 1,350 new cases on Wednesday, the highest daily total since February. Experts say the delta variant first identified in India may be driving the spread. The Lisbon region has accounted for almost 1,000 of the new cases.
