COVID live updates: Victoria records highest single-day coronavirus case numbers

Numbers indicate ‘real escalation’ in Victorian outbreak

Casey Briggs is back, talking about these numbers in Victoria.

There are now 10,407 cases associated with this current wave.

There were 19,958 cases in the second wave last year and there are over 50,000 cases associated with the NSW outbreak.

Briggs said the Victorian curve had showed some signs of slowing, so today is a “real escalation”.

Briggs is at pains to say one day does not indicate a trend.

He also said this might just be associated with one area in Melbourne and we won’t know that until the details are released at Victoria’s press conference later.

Briggs said yesterday Hume was the real epicentre of Melbourne’s numbers, and remains a real concern as one of the lowest vaccinated LGAs in Melbourne, although is one of the fastest vaccinated metropolitan areas in Melbourne at the moment.

“We have seen single-day big escalations before, as this mountain has continued to climb,’ Briggs said.

“Where is it going to go from here? We need more time to know that and some of the key questions about exactly where are these cases and what’s the nature of them will tell us more and we’ll get that later in the morning.”
