Washington state reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 18,003 new cases. That’s down 13% from the previous week’s tally of 20,695 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Washington state ranked 12th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 10.9% from the week before, with 770,895 cases reported. With 2.29% of the country’s population, Washington had 2.34% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 22 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Johns Hopkins University has been getting Washington state cases on an erratic schedule, which can significantly skew week-to-week comparisons.
Kitsap County reported 536 cases and five deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 567 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 43,177 cases and 352 deaths.
Mason County reported 104 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 123 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 13,010 cases and 141 deaths.
Across Washington state, cases fell in 29 counties, with the best declines in King County, with 8,109 cases from 9,177 a week earlier; in Pierce County, with 1,882 cases from 2,450; and in Clark County, with 683 cases from 1,167.

In Washington state, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in King County with 360 cases per 100,000 per week; Garfield County with 315; and Snohomish County with 256. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.
Adding the most new cases overall were King County, with 8,109 cases; Snohomish County, with 2,103 cases; and Pierce County, with 1,882. Weekly case counts rose in 10 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Grays Harbor, Kittitas and Pacific counties.
In Washington state, 49 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 56 people were reported dead.
A total of 1,591,654 people in Washington have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 12,968 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 84,762,022 people have tested positive and 1,008,585 people have died.

Washington’s COVID-19 hospital admissions falling

Hospitals in 35 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 32 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 29 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
