Bay Area doctors still urge people to get vaccinated amidst new CDC data showing drop in efficacy from 91% to 66%

San Francisco (KGO)-After the CDC released new data showing the effectiveness of vaccine drops, UCSF and Stamford Health doctors are still encouraging people to be vaccinated.

The CDC cited two studies that showed that the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine was reduced from 91% to 66%. This is because immunity weakens over time and the delta mutant remains highly contagious.

“I’m not surprised by this new data,” said Dr. Monica Gandhi of the University of California, San Francisco.

“It went down a bit, but it’s still high. It means our first line of defense, our antibodies, is down because we all got the vaccine someday, but we T cells are still protecting us. “She explained.

One study was conducted on front-line health care workers who were first vaccinated at the end of 2020. Another study was conducted on people in Los Angeles County.

We have shown groundbreaking cases from fully vaccinated people, but only a few have been hospitalized.

A CDC study showed that only 3% of fully vaccinated people were hospitalized. This is a sign of a good vaccine, said Bay Area doctors.

“The number of vaccines is still noteworthy,” said Dr. Standelesinsky, an infectious disease expert at Stamford Health. “There is no vaccine that completely kills the virus, but the important thing is to limit the number of people who can become seriously ill.”

They both want people to still be vaccinated, despite new research.

“That’s the best you can still do to protect yourself and the people around you,” said Dr. Gandhi. “The more people who get vaccinated, the more people can be prevented from dying.”
