Akron transplant patient who testified to CDC hopeful after third shot

Phil Canuto, a former Akron Beacon Journal medical reporter and a kidney transplant patient Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2021 in Akron, Ohio. He has received a third/booster COVID-19 vaccine shot.

Kidney transplant recipient Phil Canuto of Akron has had three doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. 

The 69-year-old got his third shot on Aug. 15, only a few days after approval by the Food and Drug Administration and guidance by the CDC for immunosuppressed patients.

Canuto was one of only eight people nationwide selected to testify via a Zoom call to the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices on July 22 before the approvals. He shared his story and asked that the committee recommend the third dose for patients like him.
