OVERVIEW: Moderna Seeks 4th Shot; Hong Kong Passes 1 Million Cases; WHO Says BA.2 Makes Up 75% of Sequences Worldwide

Moderna is seeking approval for a fourth COVID-19 vaccination shot, pending a grant for emergency authorization use from the Food and Drug Administration, the company announced Thursday.

Michigan reported 2,770 new cases of COVID-19 in the last two days, a jump in numbers that health experts are attributing in part to the BA.2 variant, WXYZ reports.

Hong Kong said that more than one million people in the city of 7.5 million had tested positive for the coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic, a worrying milestone for a city being battered by an extraordinarily lethal Omicron wave, the New York Times reports.

The World Health Organization’s technical lead on COVID-19, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, said about 75% of the sequences available worldwide are BA.2 and 25% are BA.1, which is the original Omicron strain. (Deadline.com report.)

 

KANE COUNTY: 33 New Cases, 1 Death Recorded Friday

Kane County saw 33 new COVID-19 cases and one additional death in data reported today by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

To date, 125,230 Kane County residents have tested positive and 1,114 Kane County residents have died from COVID-19 infection.

Kane County’s seven-day test positive rate remains at 1.8%.

 

STATE OF ILLINOIS: 7,467 New Cases, 123 Deaths This Week

The Illinois Department of Public Health today reported 7,467 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease in Illinois, including an increase of 123 deaths since March 11, 2022.

The IDPH reported 1,388 new cases and 18 deaths since yesterday.

Every county in Illinois is at a low community level, according to the CDC.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 3,053,185 cases, including 33,198 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois.

Since March 11, 2022, laboratories have reported 596,385 specimens for a total of 56,328,379.

As of last night, 528 individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 88 patients were in the ICU and 35 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from March 11-17, 2022, is 1.3%.  The preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity from March 11-17, 2022, is 1.2%.

A total of 21,273,924 vaccines have been administered in Illinois as of last midnight.

The seven-day rolling average of vaccines administered daily is 8,104 doses. Since March 11, 2022, 56,726 doses were reported administered in Illinois.

Of Illinois’ total population, more than 76% has received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, 68% of Illinois’ total population is fully vaccinated, and more than 49% boosted according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
