OVERVIEW: U.S. COVID Deaths Drop Dramatically; New Cases Plummet 90% Since Peak; WHO Expresses Concern About Drop in Testing
As you can see by the CDC graphics above, COVID-19 deaths across the U.S. are now falling almost as dramatically as the fall in case counts. The daily number of COVID-19 cases has now dropped to levels the U.S. hasn’t seen since November 2021, prior to the Omicron surge.
U.S. health officials are optimistic, albeit cautiously, the country has turned the corner on the unprecedented wave of infection caused by the omicron COVID variant as new cases plummet 90% from a pandemic record set just five weeks ago, CNBC reports.
Hong Kong will require its more than seven million residents to undergo coronavirus testing in March, Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s chief executive, said Tuesday, as the territory struggles to contain its worst outbreak, the New York Times reports.

Fox News host Neil Cavuto has returned to work after surviving a bout of COVID-19 and pneumonia that he says included time in an intensive care unit and some “touch-and-go” periods, the Associated Press reports. Cavuto said doctors told him that if he had not been vaccinated, he would not have survived, because it provided some defense.
KANE COUNTY: 229 New Cases, 4 Deaths Since Friday; Test Positivity 5.0%
According to data on the Illinois Department of Public Health website, Kane County’s seven-day rolling average of test positivity is 5.0%.
Kane County recorded 229 new cases and four additional deaths since the IDPH’s last report on Friday, Feb. 18.
The Kane County totals to date are 124,029 positive COVID-19 cases and 1,089 COVID-19 deaths.
STATE OF ILLINOIS: 6,242 New Cases, 132 Deaths Over 3-Day Weekend; ICU Beds Continue To Open Up
The state of Illinois is reporting 6,242 new cases and 132 COVID-19 deaths since Friday, Feb. 18. State offices were closed Monday, Feb. 21, for the Presidents Day holiday.
The totals to date are 3,019,951 positive cases and 32,431 COVID-19 deaths in Illinois.
In Kane-DuPage Region 9, test positivity rates and COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to decline.
According to the IDPH, the seven-day rolling average of COVID-19 patients in Region 8 hospitals is down to 128.
About 29% of ICU beds in Region 8 are available. The IDPH website shows 118 available ICU beds in Region 8.
