New coronavirus cases increased 6.9% in Wisconsin in the week ending Sunday as the state added 7,114 cases. The previous week had 6,656 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Wisconsin ranked eighth among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 7.7% from the week before, with 298,674 cases reported. With 1.75% of the country’s population, Wisconsin had 2.38% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 13 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Brown County reported 305 cases and four deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 364 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 97,338 cases and 592 deaths.
Door County reported 37 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 45 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 8,194 cases and 79 deaths.
Kewaunee County reported 24 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 25 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 6,477 cases and 62 deaths.
Oconto County reported 44 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 58 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 12,707 cases and 126 deaths.
Shawano County reported 79 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 63 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 13,392 cases and 158 deaths.
Marinette County reported 36 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 66 cases and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 13,420 cases and 140 deaths.
Within Wisconsin, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Menominee County with 285 cases per 100,000 per week; Rusk County with 212; and Chippewa County with 201. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.
Adding the most new cases overall were Milwaukee County, with 1,132 cases; Dane County, with 793 cases; and Waukesha County, with 388. Weekly case counts rose in 45 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Milwaukee, Racine and Fond du Lac counties.

Across Wisconsin, cases fell in 23 counties, with the best declines in Brown County, with 305 cases from 364 a week earlier; in Outagamie County, with 169 cases from 219; and in Wood County, with 79 cases from 116.
In Wisconsin, 40 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 43 people were reported dead.
A total of 1,873,748 people in Wisconsin have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 15,303 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 96,699,237 people have tested positive and 1,062,564 people have died.

Hospitals in 18 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 15 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds.
