On Monday October 10 ‘World Mental Health Day’ will take place to raise awareness of the need to look out for each other, as well as ourselves, when it comes to protecting mental health.
his important initiative by the World Health Organisation will use as its slogan: ‘Make mental health and well-being for all a global priority.’
The Samaritans in Kerry is availing of the opportunity to remind everyone that no matter how anxious, worried or isolated they might feel, a team of committed Samaritans is always there to listen.
Even though the worst of the COVID pandemic might be behind us, some people are still suffering from its effects.
And now, as the days become shorter and nights become longer, it’s worth remembering that there is always a light on at the Samaritans.
The Kerry branch of Samaritans has responded to over twenty-five thousand calls for help so far this year from people all over the country.
The calls range from people who are in various degrees of anxiety or distress, but also from those who just need to talk about what is troubling them.
The thing to remember is that everyone experiences tough times and the Samaritans would like to urge people that they need not be alone while struggling with negative situations or thoughts.
Samaritans’ volunteers are not there to judge or give advice but are trained to deal with all sorts of calls. These may range from mental health issues or loneliness to trauma and bereavement.
In recent months, they have begun to see a rise in calls in relation to the country’s cost of living crisis.
Financial issues almost always have a compounding effect on everyone’s worries.
Again, the message from the Samaritans is simple: no one needs to feel alone with their troubles.
Sharing your problems with someone can be an enormous benefit to your mental well-being.
Samaritans can be contacted on their free 24hr helpline number 116 123 or by email to jo@samaritans.ie.
