By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that reported cases of COVID-19 have increased by almost 30% globally over the last 2 weeks.

WHO warns that new variants of the virus are spreading rapidly and the public must remain vigilant and take precautionary measures, the Voice of America reports.

There have been 558 million cases with over 6.3 million deaths due to COVID-19.

More recently, health experts say that BA.4 and BA.5 variants are driving new waves of the disease in Europe and the United States.

WHO officials say that testing for COVID-19 has decreased. Meanwhile, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that as the virus evolves, there is decreased immunity.

“As the virus evolves, vaccine’s protection, while it still is really effective at preventing serious diseases and death, does wane. Decreasing immunity underscores the importance of boosters, especially for the most at risk,” Tedros stated.

In addition, WHO officials are urging countries to boost their plans for surveillance and preparedness to tackle the new surge in COVID-19 cases.

WHO said that countries can implement tested public health measures, such as testing, masking, and vaccinating to protect themselves.
