Taos County and New Mexico continued to see relatively high rates of COVID-19 transmission over the past week, although according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals in Taos County currently face a medium risk of infection.
The county clocked 103 new confirmed infections over the past week, compared to 111 new cases the week before, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.
A total of 5,997 Taos County residents have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic began.
Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 continued to increase statewide, with the New Mexico Department of Health reporting that 199 individuals are receiving inpatient treatment for COVID-19 statewide compared to 175 one week ago. In early May just 39 people were hospitalized due to COVID-19 in New Mexico. Nationwide, the CDC reported there were 25,643 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of press time, up from 22,677 last Wednesday (June 22).
Two additional deaths were reported among Taos County residents over the the past week, bringing the total number of deaths here due to COVID-19 to 94. The last COVID-19 death in Taos County occurred roughly a month ago.
As of Wednesday (June 29), the state has seen more than 562,791 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March of 2020, an increase of 8,120 infections since June 21. The state’s death toll reached 7,928 on Wednesday, up from 7,883 deaths recorded last week and 7,865 just two weeks ago. The CDC reported Wednesday that 1,011,508 individuals have died in the United States due to COVID-19.
Taos County residents (aged 18+) remain 90 percent fully vaccinated, 99 percent partially vaccinated and 60 percent boosted, according to the department of health. For the state as a whole, approximately 80 percent are fully vaccinated and 95 percent are partially vaccinated. Sixty-eight percent of New Mexicans have received one booster shot, while seven percent have received more than one.
For younger New Mexicans (aged 12-17), roughly 62 percent are fully vaccinated, 70 percent are partially vaccinated and 43 percent have received one booster. Thirty-two percent of children aged 5-11 have been fully vaccinated and 40 percent have been partially vaccinated.
