Knox County saw only three additional COVID-19 cases during the past day, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday, March 17. This is one of the smallest one-day increases in a year.
There have been no additional hospitalizations reported in the past eight days in Knox County. The CDC, however, added another death of a Knox County resident in its March 17 report.
The Maine CDC says deaths and hospitalizations are a better metric to use than case numbers.
Since the pandemic began in Maine in March 2020, 5,799 Knox County residents have been diagnosed with the virus, 80 have been admitted to hospitals, and 33 have died. Eleven of those deaths of Knox County residents have occurred in the past month, the highest pace since the pandemic began two years ago.
Statewide, an additional 284 cases were reported during the past day. Twelve additional deaths were reported statewide March 17, increasing that number to 2,179.
There were four additional people statewide admitted to hospitals in Maine with COVID-19 during the past day, increasing that number at 4,475 since the pandemic began in March 2020.
The CDC reports 115 Mainers currently in the hospital, down from a record high of 436 in early January. Of the 115 hospitalized, 24 are in critical care units and seven on ventilators. Seventy-three critical care beds are available in Maine.
Seventy percent of hospitalized patients are people who have not been vaccinated, and 90 percent of people in critical care units are unvaccinated.
