This milestone has been achieved in 275 days since the first vaccine was given in January 2020, writes Sky’s India reporter Neville Lazarus.
In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “India scripts history. We are witnessing a triumph of Indian science, enterprise and collective spirit of 130 crore Indians. Congrats India on crossing 100 crore vaccinations. Gratitude to our doctors, nurses and all those who worked to achieve this feat.”
To celebrate the achievement, the government has plans to make public announcements in aircrafts, ships, trains, metro stations and other public spaces.
Even though it’s an achievement in this large, remote and diverse country, there is still a long way to go.
Less than 21% of the adult population of 944 million have been fully vaccinated, while just over half of people have received one dose.
Moreover, those under the age of 18 – who make up 41% of the population – are ineligible for the vaccine.
For months, the country has faced huge problems with the supply of the vaccines, cold chain storage, transport, and a fair amount of vaccine hesitancy.
