Mecklenburg County, NC – On Sept. 17, 2021, the FDA scientific advisory committee voted to recommend authorizing a booster shot for recipients of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine who are 65 or older or are at high risk of severe disease. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is scheduled to meet September 22-23, 2021 to discuss further clinical recommendations regarding booster doses.
Mecklenburg County Public Health (MCPH) will wait for these recommendations from the ACIP/CDC before providing booster shots to eligible individuals. MCPH will not be offering booster doses prior to these recommendations. If the ACIP/CDC make the decision to recommend booster doses for specific individuals, MCPH does expect to begin offering booster doses as per CDC guidance.

“We understand the interest in booster doses and will keep our community up to date,” said Gibbie Harris, Public Health Director, “We want to encourage anyone who has not been vaccinated to get vaccinated.”
