CDC says cases of diabetes in youth expected to increase by 2060

WISCONSIN (WKBT) — New research shows the number of young people with diabetes is likely to increase…

If the CDC study’s predictions are accurate, in 2060, 200,000 people under age 20 will be living with Type 2 diabetes.

That’s a 700% increase from current numbers.

During the same time, Type 1 diabetes could increase by as much as 65%.

Type 1 is considered an autoimmune deficiency.

Health experts are not sure what’s causing the increase.

However, Type 2 diabetes is related to America’s obesity epidemic.

A Mayo Clinic Health System professor says Type 2 in children can be reversed if families set a healthy example.

“It’s really a family issue, I think families need to be active and eat healthy and do it together and that way we can curb the tide of diabetes in kids and adults,” said Rozalina McCoy, associate professor at Mayo Clinic Health System.

While Type 2 diabetes can be improved or reversed with lifestyle changes, researchers are still trying to find a way to prevent Type 1.
