Florida added 8,376 coronavirus cases and 99 deaths Wednesday, as the state continued on a path that could have it cross the 1 million-infection threshold over Thanksgiving weekend.

The statewide total of cases recorded since March now stands at 961,676, according to the Florida Department of Health. About 8,061 cases are being announced per day, according to the weekly average.

Florida’s coronavirus death toll now stands at 18,482. The death average increased slightly, to about 76 people announced dead per day.

Hospitalizations: Nearly 3,800 people are hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of coronavirus, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. More than 800 of those are in the Tampa Bay area.

The number of people hospitalized has been steadily increasing in recent weeks as the number of cases has risen.

About 25 percent of hospital beds and 22 percent of intensive care unit beds were available across Florida. In Tampa Bay, about 24 percent of hospital beds and 20 percent of ICU beds were available.

Cases that led to a hospitalization increased by 313 admissions.

Positivity: Florida’s average weekly positivity rate is about 7.8 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University. It is one of 45 states that doesn’t meet the World Health Organization’s recommendation for a rate of 5 percent or below.

The positivity rate has decreased over the past week as testing has increased — it’s down about 1 percentage point from where it stood a week ago. A higher positivity rate can indicate that there isn’t enough widespread testing to capture mild and asymptomatic coronavirus cases.

Local numbers: Tampa Bay added 1,249 coronavirus cases and 26 deaths Wednesday.

Twelve deaths were reported in Hillsborough County; three each in Pinellas County, Pasco County and Hernando County; two in both Citrus County and Polk County; and one in Manatee County.

As of Wednesday’s counts, Hillsborough has 56,497 cases and 909 deaths; Pinellas has 31,795 cases and 888 deaths; Polk has 26,833 cases and 673 deaths; Manatee has 16,218 cases and 372 deaths; Pasco has 14,131 cases and 272 deaths; Hernando has 4,750 cases and 206 deaths; and Citrus has 4,498 cases and 161 deaths.
