Level three restrictions will remain in place for Auckland until at least this Sunday.
New Zealand has recorded nine new cases of coronavirus, including one returned overseas traveller.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that current level three restrictions would stay in place for Auckland until 11.59pm on Sunday, instead of the originally announced Wednesday lift.
“These extra three days are necessary for us if we want to eventually move to a lower level,” Ms Ardern said.
“Schools, hospitality and retail will reopen but we will keep an eye on mass gatherings though.”
Ms Ardern also said mask wearing will be mandatory for anyone who travels on public transport from Monday, September 1.
“We also encourage anyone in Auckland to wear face coverings when out in public anyway,” Ms Ardern said.
